Music adds so much more than just an audio backdrop to a moving image. Done correctly it enhances emotion, drawing one deeper into the drama, be it a thriller or a natural history documentary. It doesn't need to overpower or stand out on its own. It compliments, it colours, it underlines, it guides, it fills the gap between what is seen and what should be felt.

It is such an understated element being used in almost every possible facet of todays digital media. Whether you notice it or not its almost impossible to go through the day and not stumble across music of one form or another.

Think of the hundreds of television channels and the thousands of programmes that populate them. Pretty much every single show has a signature tune, maybe a different track for the closing credits and then all the music between that you may not really notice.

A quiz show for example will possibly have several short pieces for various rounds, atmospheric and tension sound beds as the camera closes in on a contestant struggling to answer the £1 million question. A fanfare for when its answered correctly or a sound design element if answered wrong.

Natural history programmes are often crammed with the most beautiful music and its written and constructed in such a way that it doesn't detract from the visual images being shown.

The masssive influx of 'property' and 'auction' shows currently inhabiting our screens all use music to enhance different aspects of the show. A scenic shot of the countryside accompanied by soft gentle piano or some speeded up footage of a group of DIY'ers painting a room to a comic bouncy saxaphone track in the vein of 'The Benny Hill Show'.

Drama will utlilise everything from period classical orchestration to urban dance, ambient audio to hard adrenaline thrash metal.

Ok, I've scratched the surface of music for television but think also of film, not just the themes but also during the film where music is used to convey emotion, excitement, action and romance. PC games nowadays contain pretty much every element that films do but with the added bonus that it:s actually you shooting the bad guys, building an empire or escaping zombie city. Be it tranquility, dance, epic orchestra, electronica, hip-hop or spooky atmospheric, tension, suspense or cheesy menu music, game audio nowadays is big business with todays games absolutely packed to the brim with music.

And it doesn't stop there. Your mobile phone ring tones, your pc or pda and of course the fastest growing medium of them all, the internet and flash animation.

All these utilise music in so many ways and yet much of the time we hardly notice it's there, but without it how dull would our day to day lives be.
