Un passo più lungo (2006)
Directed by Omar Pesenti
This Italian film short follows an investigator as he recalls the last case he
has been working on and how it
brought him to a situation without escape roads... .
“Un passo più lungo” is a
homage to the american noir
The short is a summary of the
typical narrative environment of
that cinema and at the same time a
sort of analysis of the genre... Since
the day it was born the noir has
been posted in relation to the dream
and I wanted to deepen this cha-
racteristic: so I experimented and
insisted on the cross dissolve usage trying to generate a dream atmosphere.

The screenplay too is developed in these terms: the events follow one another in a confused way and above all its the atmosphere that counts. I would have liked to
collaborate with a cinematographer because, speaking about the style, I wanted to
travel over again the genre history, starting from a realistic photography, like the Hawks one for example, to iper-realistic like the Aldrich one, passing from the
Lang expressionism... I tried equally to follow this idea: at a stylistic level, the short really changes from the beginning to the end of the story.
The thing that interested me also, was to tell something about me, about my way
of thinking and my way of seeing, hiding it in a genre movie, that entertains.
The Music
"A Step Too Far"
This soundtrack needed to make the connection between the classic genre that influenced it and the expectations of a modern day audience.
It had to capture a dark almost sinister feel without being too cliché. A lot of the atmosphere comes from how the film was shot, I’m hoping the music underlines this
A
still
from
the
film
and helps create a suitable edgy background. Omar Pesenti - the director - already had strong ideas for how the overall sound should come across with influential nods from Vertigo and Sunset Boulevard.
Hopefully the end product of dramatic strings and brass coupled with a more modern orchestration will help tell a dark tale with the suspense and tension it deserves.
